Traversing between the surreal and the real, ZHANG An says he has no intention of "depicting the ruins of demolition to vent his negative emotions. Instead, he is physically recording the alienation and anxiety felt by a young man adrift in the vicissitudes of life through painting." He is currently pursuing his PhD at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing where he did his undergraduate and graduate studies from 2010 to 2018. The process of studying is a long one, and painting, his greatest passion, is yet another long road. Stepping out of the academic ivory tower, he looks forward to devoting himself to pragmatic practice on this path. As China strides towards a more modern future, ZHANG continues to use his attentive caring eyes to capture the scenes in transition, abandoned ruins, and the lives of ordinary people in the changing times like time-lapse photography.
