Kuang-Yu TSUI 崔廣宇

Kuang-Yu TSUI’s work is a response to the adaptation relationship between human and the society. Coming from a biological point of view, his action videos seek to redefine or question the matrix of our situated systems and institutions. Through different actions and experiments that go beyond the norm, he has developed new means to adapt to the environment and examine the reality. His action could be regarded as a medium, or a parameter for environmental evaluation; the repetitive body experiments accent the absurdity of accustomed social values, and expose the relation and phenomenon between human and their environment. On the other hand, his actions could also be described as a sort of measurement or questioning of our immediate social surroundings and culture. Such actions are what the artist calls a “shortcut,” the intersubjectivity in engaging and altering the environment, or a concept and demonstration of how to bypass systems or environmental obstacles.
Within this imaginative framework bonded closely to an urban environment, the artist remains in his original identity and unearths a crack in this system or exposes an invisible parasitic system. This crack could be an ambiguous, informal structure of a certain social behavior, or of the environment per se. As TSUI moves about in different cities, this concept has been elaborated as he develops new works. In his The Shortcut to Systematic Life (2002) series, “shortcut” refers to a special technique to quickly blend into a different life circle. The camouflaged body could bring the character into different urban groups or situations to satisfy a high-speed identity crossover imagination. In the metaphor of biological phenomenon ‘mimicry’, it also implies and mocks on the superficial value accenting on the performative actions of the constant adapting of new looks and social behaviours according to the surroundings. From City Spirits (2005) to the commissioned work for the 2006 Liverpool Biennial, the concept of shortcut is developed as an alternative solution to deal with vague urban space; the actions are carried out in order to shift the original definition or function of the chosen sites. For example, the narrow stone-paved passage, which was installed to prevent people to walk over aside a parking lot was transformed into a health massage pathway commonly seen in Asia. Several mobile crosswalks are installed for the public service in a main street in Liverpool due to the original unfriendly design for pedestrians.
These projects explain how I reconfigures the urban space through finding or attaching a second meaning to the original urban environment. The urban survival strategy that the subject negotiates with the environment’s potentiality and develops for personal adaptation in everyday situation becomes the core concern in my work, which address the margin of human-environment interaction and informal social system. The actions reveal the process of such negotiation, and offer a challengeable diverse thinking on the urban system.
Kuang-Yu TSUI is most recognized for his action videos that accent the absurdity of contemporary life. His work present contrasting actions and interactions with the surrounding environment that can be taken as a trace of or parameter for social interception. These absurd yet subjective interceptions are what the artist calls “shortcuts,” or a medium and method that measure and question the culture and society in which we exist. As such, Tsui has demonstrated a way to alter the reality or survive within the crevices in the present institution, and overcome the obstacles in our living environment.

His practice Much like a creature using mimicry to blend into its surroundings, the artist used slapstick moments in his works to allude to a social misfit trying to find a variety of adaptation strategies and possibilities of different modes of life in the existing living environment. At the same time, he presents an alternative social system in the process of his adaptation to the environment and observation and discovery of the urban city. TSUI works spontaneously allowing form and content, and art and life to merge seamlessly together.
