Ngan Leong CHEUNG 張銀亮
Let it be the lake district or hill towns in north-central Italy, the ancient Ming-Qing villages in northern China, the streets of her Quanzhou hometown, or simply a corner of the City Hall Bus Station in Taipei, Ngan Leong CHEUNG contemplates the nuances in the customs, climates and crafts of the places she visits, and transforms the landscapes in front of her eyes into monoprints and small oil paintings. The modernized yet culturally rich scenes in CHEUNG's works are more than faithful recreation of what she sees, but rather the externally inspired expression of her experiences and thoughts on people, herself, the surrounding, or even civilization and nature. Though drawn from cities of very different climates and geographies, the light source, atmosphere, people's postures, contrasting colors, and affective emotions are the foci of her paintings. This selective accentuation is especially evident in CHEUNG's oil paintings that illustrate her creative intention: "To infuse the pure landscape into the perceived human environment, and to inquire the intricate social forms to understand people and oneself."
