ESLITE GALLERY is pleased to present “One Plus One” from November 3rd to 25th, 2018. A collaborative exhibition initiated by Michael Lin, “One Plus One” takes its title from the 1968 film by Jean Luc Godard and engages in a montage of works by the artist himself and Beat Streuli with contributions by Roan Ching Yue and David Yu.

The exhibition consists of elements, which constitute an architectural space or storefront, being a display window and three walls. In “One Plus One” these three walls are built separately, one in each of the gallery’s three exhibition spaces. The vitrine shows Streuli’s enlarged portrait of Taipei urbanites and the exhibition title mirroring seamlessly the advertisements and window displays in and around the gallery and the Xin Yi district. Inside the gallery, three walls made of standard lightweight aluminum frames and plywood panels stand each in a different room. In the center of the first room, Michael Lin’s wall painting of amplified textile patterns is freestanding, a sculptural object in its own right, while also taking on the role as support for Streuli’s billboard size photographic works. In the second room, the arrangement reverses, with Streuli’s wall size collage and video projection as the supporting surface for Lin’s work on canvas. In the third room, Lin’s wall painting reveals its support of aluminum framing, while also doubling as a shelving unit displaying products chosen by David Yu from the eslite store, a portrait of Yu’s materialist desires. Finally, a publication of Roan Ching Yue’s writings along with images from Streuli and snapshots of Lin’s work in progress from his studio, accompanies the exhibition.

In “One Plus One,” Michael Lin brings together eslite Xinyi store, ESLITE GALLERY, Beat Streuli, David Yu and Roan Ching Yueh. As in the Godard film, which utilizes montage as its main mode operation, this exhibition assembles a list of collaborators, Department store plus Art Gallery plus artists plus writer plus graphic designer. This exhibition makes transparent the relationships of the site and locality, contemporary art and business, promotion and publicity, by exposing and challenging the modes of production and dissemination of art and exhibition.

Michael LIN

Lin turns away from painting as an object of contemplation toward one of painting as a bounded, physical space, one we can settle into and inhabit (Vivian Rehberg). Lin orchestrates monumental painting installations that re-conceptualize and reconfigure public spaces. Using patterns and designs appropriated from traditional Taiwanese textiles his works have been exhibited in major institutions and international Biennials around the world The Vancouver Art Gallery, 2010, The Rock Bund Art Museum, 2012, Auckland Triennial and California Pacific Triennial both 2013, High Museum, Atlanta, 2015 and most recently at The Shenzhen Biennial of Urbanism and Architecture and The National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne.

Transforming the institutional architecture of the public museum, his unconventional paintings invite visitors to reconsider their usual perception of those spaces, and to become an integral part of the work, giving meaning to its potential as an area for interaction, encounter, and re-creation.
